 As I walk towards the school, I have a wonderful time greeting passers-by with a cheerful "Molweni." Surprisingly, the goats and sheep appear to join the procession, contributing to the friendly exchanges. The joyful bleats and gentle 'baahs' fill the air, creating an atmosphere of unity and camaraderie.
When I arrive at school, a chorus of children's voices fills the air like a beautiful melody. Some young athletes are engrossed in a competitive soccer match, while others demonstrate their agility through playful skipping routines. A remarkable sense of community prevails amid the laughter and banter, uniting everyone in a shared moment of togetherness. Break time has taken on new meaning for me as I witness the embodiment of UBUNTU, "I am because we are", in action. I watch as students form circles and share not only their lunch but also their stories and dreams. As it passes from one eager hand to another, a soccer ball becomes a conduit of connection, fostering an inclusive spirit. During this break, it becomes clear that minor mishaps are unavoidable - a stumble here, a fall there, a missed skip. But it is the immediate outpouring of support from friends and peers that truly warms the heart. They rally around their injured comrade, embodying the essence of empathy and solidarity, with a compassionate embrace or a soothing cup of water. The field is transformed into a display of shared humanity, with the concept of "every child for themselves" being replaced by a collective, nurturing ethos. The children of Zithulele Independent School are cultivating life skills rooted in compassion and mutual care in this one-of-a-kind environment. It is a heartwarming sight that reaffirms the power of community and leaves an indelible impression on anyone lucky enough to witness it.
